The Croatian Knights of the Round Table, contrastingly, appeared to have lost their Excalibur, in what can only be deemed as an uncharacteristically sloppy commencement to their campaign. Historically having demonstrated an aptitude for David versus Goliath-esque battles, it was an underwhelming sight to see the side, that boasted World Cup finalist and semi-finalist credentials, falter considerably.
The esteemed midfield of Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic, and Mateo Kovacic — a troika that possessed a staggering 372 international caps amongst themselves — were curiously rendered ineffective in the face of Spain’s ceaseless onslaught.
The Croatian defenses, reminiscent of the Battle of Austerlitz’s defensive tactics, were tragically permeable, allowing Morata to navigate through the sea of defenders with Ruiz’s assist, thereby elegantly dispatching the ball past Dominik Livakovic. This successful strike elevated Morata to a pedestal occupied by only Cristiano Ronaldo and Michel Platini – the third-highest scoring slot in the history of European Championships.
