Senior OLF Leaders Finally Released After Years in Detention

After more than four years in detention without charges, seven senior leaders of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) have been released. Despite multiple court orders for their freedom, Abdi Regassa, Lemi Begna, Dawit Abdeta, Michael Boran, Kenessa Ayana, Gada Oljira, and Gada Gabisa were held by Oromia police since 2020 and 2021.

The detainees were initially accused of various offenses, including involvement in the killing of a police officer and the assassination of Oromo singer Hachalu Hundessa. Despite court rulings clearing them of all charges in 2021 and 2022, the detainees remained in custody, with their whereabouts frequently unknown to family members and legal representatives.

The release of these OLF leaders comes as a result of sustained pressure from the OLF, human rights organizations, political parties, and public advocacy. Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, had criticized the prolonged detentions and lack of transparency surrounding the treatment of the detainees.

The release of the senior OLF leaders is a significant development in Ethiopia, reflecting a step towards justice and accountability in the country’s legal system. It highlights the importance of continued advocacy efforts to ensure the protection of human rights and the rule of law.
