Malawi’s esteemed academic, Professor Richard Mkandawire, has been honored with the inaugural Afreximbank Research and Innovation Competence award for his outstanding contributions to the field of agriculture. This prestigious award, presented during the annual meeting in Nassau City, recognizes Professor Mkandawire’s significant role in advancing research development and capacity building within Africa’s agriculture and food systems.

Furthermore, Professor Mkandawire’s remarkable achievements include his pivotal role in the conceptualization and implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) during his tenure as the Head of CAADP at NEPAD. His visionary leadership has been instrumental in driving impactful and evidence-based policies that have catalyzed the domestication of CAADP across African nations.

In addition to Professor Mkandawire, Linus Opara Umezuruike, a Distinguished Professor in Post-Harvest Technology at Stellenbosch University, was also recognized with the ‘Africa Research Excellence Award’ for his innovative approaches to post-harvest research and capacity building in Africa.

Both awardees exemplify excellence in advancing the Agricultural Innovation System, as recognized by the AFRICA Independent Awards Selection Committee (AIASC) and the Africa Awards Working Group (AAWG) comprised of eminent personalities and professionals from FARA and Afreximbank.
