Iran’s interim Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, has arrived in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia to participate in the foreign ministerial meeting of the BRICS group. Upon his arrival, he was greeted by Iran’s ambassador to Moscow and officials from the Russian Foreign Ministry. This marks the first meeting of BRICS foreign ministers since Iran became a member of the group.

Bagheri Kani highlighted the significance of Iran’s membership in BRICS, emphasizing the organization’s role in the global economic and trade landscape outside of Western unilateralism. He stated that Iran’s participation showcases the country’s importance in the multilateral world system.

The meeting will include foreign ministers from nine other BRICS member states and will focus on cooperation within the group as well as addressing key regional and international issues. Iran officially joined BRICS in 2024, joining countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The organization represents a significant portion of the global population and GDP.

Iran had applied for membership in BRICS along with other countries and has been actively working to strengthen the organization’s role in global economic and political mechanisms. The meeting is scheduled for June 10-11, where discussions on various topics of mutual interest will take place among member states.
