Ethiopia Holds National Forum for Developing AfCFTA Implementation Strategy

The Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, in partnership with the Policy Studies Institute and with support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, recently organized a National Forum aimed at developing the National African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation Strategy. The event brought together more than 70 participants from various sectors, including private industries, government representatives, academia, youth, women, and developmental partners.

During the forum, Gebremeskel Chala, the Minister of MoTRI, emphasized the government’s dedication to creating open markets for trade and exchanging ideas. He praised the involvement of PSI and ECA in shaping the Ethiopia National AfCFTA Implementation Strategy, underscoring the forum’s importance in laying the groundwork for a successful implementation strategy.

Beyene Petros, the Director General of PSI, stressed the need for full commitment and ownership from all stakeholders as the strategy is developed and implemented. He highlighted the crucial role that each participant plays in the process.

Representing the private sector, Mr. Wubie Mengistu, Secretary-General of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations, commended the Ethiopian Government for ratifying the AfCFTA agreement. He also mentioned ECCSA’s efforts in raising awareness and preparing the private sector for trading under the AfCFTA.

Stephen Karingi, the Director of Regional Integration and Trade Division at ECA, expressed gratitude to Global Affairs Canada for their support in advancing Africa’s integration agenda and assisting Ethiopia in developing its National AfCFTA Implementation Strategy. Karingi emphasized the effectiveness of consultative and inclusive forums, citing experiences with other AfCFTA State Parties in developing their strategies.

The forum served as a vital platform for engaging in meaningful discussions and fostering collaboration among key stakeholders to propel the development of Ethiopia’s AfCFTA Implementation strategy. It marked a significant achievement in Ethiopia’s pursuit of regional integration.

The National Forum for the development of the AfCFTA Implementation Strategy showcased Ethiopia’s commitment to advancing trade and regional integration in Africa. With strong partnerships and stakeholder engagement, Ethiopia is poised to make significant strides in implementing the AfCFTA and reaping the benefits of increased trade and economic growth.
