Russia has pledged to facilitate the smooth integration of new members into the working structures of the BRICS association, with necessary decisions expected to be made by the upcoming summit in Kazan. The announcement was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with the leadership of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
President Putin called on the Russian government and the Foreign Ministry to continue substantive work and dialogue with partners, stating, “I request that significant progress be made on decisions that define our cooperation in areas such as politics and security, economy and finance, science and culture, sports, and humanitarian ties, to be presented at the BRICS summit in Kazan in October.”
Putin emphasized that the potential of the BRICS association could enable it to evolve into a “fundamental regulatory institution within a multipolar world order.” He further expressed optimism about the ongoing systemic changes globally, indicating that the adherence to principles of multipolarity in international affairs, broad representativeness, and respect for international law can facilitate the establishment of mutually beneficial state relationships.
The BRICS association, initially established in 2006, has seen two expansion phases. South Africa was integrated into the original group, which comprised Brazil, Russia, India, and China, in 2011. On January 1, 2024, the BRICS association further expanded and welcomed five new members, namely Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
