Representative Susan Wild, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations, delivered an opening statement on May 7, 2024, at the hearing titled “Brazil: A Crisis of Democracy, Freedom, and Rule of Law?”

In her statement, Representative Wild expressed her belief that a different focus should be given to the bilateral relationship between the United States and Brazil, highlighting areas of cooperation such as labor rights, climate protection, poverty alleviation, and economic growth. She emphasized the need for mutual respect and cooperation between the two democracies.

She defended Brazil’s democratic institutions, citing the country’s history of transitioning from military dictatorship to a robust democracy with strong judicial oversight. Representative Wild criticized the framing of the current hearing, stating that it undermines the partnership between the two nations.

She highlighted President Bolsonaro’s actions as triggering responses from Brazil’s legal system to safeguard democracy against threats of authoritarianism. She also drew parallels between the January 6th and January 8th attacks in Brazil and the United States, calling for a deeper investigation into any connections between the events.

Representative Wild submitted reports on the January 8th attacks in Brazil for the record and emphasized the need for both countries to work together to protect their democracies. She concluded by reaffirming her commitment to defending the vision of democracy and cooperation between the United States and Brazil.
