At the sidelines of the G7 Summit held in Italy’s Puglia region on June 14, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva engaged in a bilateral discussion with Turkish President Recep Erdoğan.

During the meeting, Erdoğan solicited Lula’s backing for Turkey’s aspiration to become a member of BRICS, an association initially composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group later added Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Iran to its membership in 2023.

Assuring his support, Lula expressed his desire to tour Turkey, a country linking Europe and the Middle East. In return, Erdoğan confirmed his plans to attend the forthcoming G20 Summit scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18 and 19.
