Tragic Explosion Claims Lives at Tamil Nadu Firecracker Factory
In a devastating incident on June 29, 2024, four workers lost their lives and one sustained injuries following an explosion at the Guru Star fireworks unit near Sattur in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu. The mishap occurred early in the morning, sending shockwaves through the local community and raising pressing concerns about safety regulations within the firecracker manufacturing industry.
The explosion, which occurred in Banthuvarpatti, has been preliminarily attributed to friction during the mixing of chemicals. The Guru Star fireworks unit is a DRO-licensed facility, which ostensibly adheres to mandated safety protocols. Despite this, the catastrophic event unfolded with deadly consequences.
Authorities have identified the deceased as M. Rajkumar (43) from Achchankulam, K. Marichamy (40) from Soorangudi, M. Selvakumar (35), and M. Mohan (30), both from Chathrapatti. All four workers sustained fatal burn injuries. Additionally, K. Ramachandran (60), the unit’s watchman, was injured by flying debris and is currently receiving treatment at the Government hospital in Sattur. The bodies of the deceased have also been transported to the same hospital.
The explosion had a significant physical impact, leveling three working sheds belonging to the unit’s proprietor, Sahadevan. Fire and Rescue services from Sattur swiftly responded to the scene, managing to extinguish the flames. Investigation into the incident is ongoing, led by the Sattur Taluk police.
In the wake of the tragic incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced a compensation package for the families of the victims. Expressing his heartfelt condolences, the Chief Minister stated that ₹3 lakh would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased worker. This compensation will be drawn from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund, emphasizing the government’s support for the bereaved families during this difficult time.
