The Thai Foreign Ministry announced on June 11 that Foreign Minister Maris Sanjampongsa formally submitted Thailand’s letter of intent to join the BRICS group of emerging economies. This submission was handed over to Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, at a meeting in Nizhny Novgorod.

The event was held amidst the “BRICS Dialogue with Developing Countries,” coinciding with the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, an invitation extended to Sanjampongsa by Lavrov.

Thailand could augment the inclusivity and interconnectedness of BRICS, enhancing the group’s effectiveness in advancing the interests of emerging nations, stated the press office of the Thai Foreign Ministry.

Moreover, during the meeting, Minister Maris Sangyampongsa conveyed to his Chinese counterpart, Minister Wang Yi, that Thailand is eager to join the group without much delay. “We aim to join the BRICS mechanism as swiftly as possible, play a proactive role in South-South cooperation and reinforce our coordination and cooperation with China on various multilateral platforms,” Maris declared.

A Thai cabinet announcement followed this declaration, led by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who had approved a government draft letter indicating Thailand’s intention to join the BRICS group the preceding month.

This meeting marks the fifth occasion that Thailand has participated in a BRICS event.
