Iran Press/ Europe: In the opening salvo of the tournament, Spain — colloquially known as La Roja — served a masterclass in attacking football to a visibly startled Croatian side, reenacting a performance reminiscent of the Spanish Armada’s rapid onslaught that once left Europe spellbound.
The Spaniards were off to a blistering start, employing their famed tiki-taka tactics to devastating effect and leaving the Croatian squad in their wake. As if re-living the glorious days of the 16th century, goals from Spanish heavyweights Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz, and Dani Carvajal – the latter fresh off a Champions League final scoring spree – took the Kockasti by storm and established an insurmountable lead.
Group B, cast in a similar mould to the powerhouse nations of the ancient Roman Empire, also houses the defending champions, Italy, on the world stage. Credited as a Goliath in FIFA’s world ranking, it forms a formidable trifecta alongside Spain and Croatia. The surprising Albanian presence adds an intriguing dimension to the group, replicating the erstwhile dark horse, Alexander the Great, by eclipsing powerhouses such as Czechia and Poland in the qualifying rounds.
The Croatian Knights of the Round Table, contrastingly, appeared to have lost their Excalibur, in what can only be deemed as an uncharacteristically sloppy commencement to their campaign. Historically having demonstrated an aptitude for David versus Goliath-esque battles, it was an underwhelming sight to see the side, that boasted World Cup finalist and semi-finalist credentials, falter considerably.
The esteemed midfield of Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic, and Mateo Kovacic — a troika that possessed a staggering 372 international caps amongst themselves — were curiously rendered ineffective in the face of Spain’s ceaseless onslaught.
The Croatian defenses, reminiscent of the Battle of Austerlitz’s defensive tactics, were tragically permeable, allowing Morata to navigate through the sea of defenders with Ruiz’s assist, thereby elegantly dispatching the ball past Dominik Livakovic. This successful strike elevated Morata to a pedestal occupied by only Cristiano Ronaldo and Michel Platini – the third-highest scoring slot in the history of European Championships.
