Marriott International Inc. Expands Its Footprint in Ethiopia to Boost Economic Growth
In a recent meeting between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Marriott International Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony Capuano, the focus was on Marriott’s strategic plans to enhance Ethiopia’s hospitality and travel sector. The company shared its growth plans, which include the addition of nine properties across the country, anticipated to generate hundreds of new jobs and contribute to Ethiopia’s economic development.
With a 26-year history in Ethiopia, Marriott has established a strong presence with the Sheraton Addis, a Luxury Collection Hotel, and Marriott Executive Apartments in Addis Ababa. Currently, the company operates two properties with over 400 rooms. The planned expansion into areas like Bahir Dar, Hawassa, Jimma, and Mekelle is expected to play a significant role in boosting economic growth, creating employment opportunities, and attracting more travelers to the region.
According to Capuano, Ethiopia is a premier destination known for its rich culture, heritage, natural landscapes, diverse travel experiences, and genuine hospitality. Marriott aims to contribute to the growth and diversification of the country’s travel sector by providing more international guests with the opportunity to experience Ethiopia’s unique beauty while supporting local economies and employment.
In addition to its business operations, Marriott and its associates in Ethiopia are actively involved in supporting communities and philanthropic causes. The Sheraton Addis, a Luxury Collection Hotel, has been supporting the Edget Behibret Primary School by providing students with stationery and school supplies since 2004. The hotel also extends its support to charitable organizations helping ill and disadvantaged youth in Addis Ababa.
Marriott’s commitment to expanding its presence in Ethiopia reflects a broader trend of international companies investing in the country’s growing hospitality and travel sector. As more tourists discover the beauty and cultural richness of Ethiopia, such investments are poised to play a crucial role in driving economic development and creating sustainable opportunities for local communities.
