Iran Joins BRICS Parliamentary Forum for the First Time: A Historic Move Toward Strengthened Global Alliances

In a landmark event, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, will lead a delegation from Tehran to St. Petersburg to participate in the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum. This appearance marks the first time a high-ranking Iranian official will attend an open meeting of BRICS since Iran officially joined the group. This was reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

    A Milestone in International Diplomacy

Scheduled for July 11-12, 2024, the forum will be held at the historical Tavrichesky Palace in St. Petersburg, signifying a monumental opportunity for Iran to engage with the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—on a global stage. The focus of this year’s forum, hosted under Russia’s chairmanship, is to explore the role of parliaments in enhancing international relations and promoting global development and security.

    Iran’s Strategic Interests

Ghalibaf’s participation aims to explore the synergies within BRICS for financial and commercial transactions. Given Iran’s strategic geopolitical positioning and its efforts to mitigate economic constraints due to international sanctions, this engagement offers an avenue to diversify its economic partnerships and collaborate on shared interests within the BRICS framework.

    Structure of the Forum

The event is set to kick off with a plenary session titled "The Parliamentary Dimension of BRICS: Prospects for Strengthening Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation", followed by a significant ceremony where the protocol to the Memorandum of Understanding on the BRICS Parliamentary Forum will be signed. This formalization represents a commitment to deepening inter-parliamentary cooperation amongst member states.

The three-day event is meticulously structured to address various critical areas:

    • Day One: Focus on international politics and cooperation, setting the tone for discussions on global diplomatic relations and collective security measures.
    • Day Two: Dedicated to economic discussions, presenting an opportunity for member countries to outline economic strategies, trade enhancements, and financial collaborations.
    • Day Three: Emphasis on humanitarian and cultural interaction, fostering shared cultural values and people-to-people connections among the BRICS nations.

    A New Era of Collaboration

Iran’s involvement in the BRICS Parliamentary Forum signifies a strategic pivot towards forming stronger alliances with emerging economies. As global power dynamics continue to shift, the collaboration among BRICS nations—including the representation from Iran—could potentially recalibrate the global economic and political landscape.

In the larger context, Iran’s accession to BRICS and subsequent participation in the parliamentary forum underscore a concerted effort to assert its role on the global stage, seeking to build resilient economic and political ties beyond Western-dominated structures.
