The Delhi High Court has requested a medical status report of Hyderabad businessman Arun Ramchandran Pillai from the jail authorities. Pillai was arrested in connection with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into the now-defunct excise policy. During a hearing on his plea for interim bail on medical grounds, a single judge bench of Justice Amit Sharma instructed that the latest report on Pillai’s medical status and treatment be obtained from the concerned jail superintendent.

In his plea seeking interim bail for eight weeks, Pillai, aged 51, stated that he has been experiencing lower back aches for the past eight years. He was apprehended by the ED on March 6, 2023. Pillai’s counsel, Nitesh Rana, highlighted that his client’s condition has not improved despite a year of treatment, and now he wishes to explore alternative forms of recognized treatment.

The plea emphasizes Pillai’s severe back pain during his incarceration, which has been affecting his daily activities. Medical tests conducted at Max Hospital revealed a multilevel degenerative disc disease, for which the consulting doctor recommended “tens laser” physiotherapy sessions. Pillai intends to undergo Panchkarma Therapy at a renowned Ayurvedic clinic in Kerala for sustainable relief from his back pain.

Considering the recurring pain and potential risks of long-term painkiller usage, Pillai and his family are seeking Ayurvedic treatment as a more effective and lower-risk alternative. The plea warns of the worsening condition of Pillai’s back and the possibility of permanent damage if proper treatment is not administered.
