Cessation of Repression on Individuals Expressing Concerns Regarding Egypt’s Economic Crisis

The Egyptian authorities are cracking down hard on dissent, targeting protesters, striking workers, and those who dare to criticize online the government’s handling of the economic crisis, as reported by Amnesty International. Arbitrary arrests, detention, and even torture have been documented, with individuals being silenced for speaking out against worsening living conditions and rising prices.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s controversial stance, deeming hunger and deprivation acceptable sacrifices for progress, has only added fuel to the fire of discontent among the people. This administration’s repressive tactics are crushing any form of peaceful dissent, whether it be through protests, strikes, or social media posts.

Rather than addressing the root causes of the economic crisis and listening to the grievances of the people, Egyptian authorities continue to silence those who dare to speak out. The international community must hold Egypt accountable for its blatant violations of human rights, including the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

The ongoing economic crisis in Egypt has pushed millions further into poverty, with skyrocketing food prices and inflation exacerbating an already dire situation. It is imperative that the Egyptian government prioritize the well-being of its citizens and address their grievances instead of resorting to repressive measures to maintain control. The rights of the people must be respected, and those arbitrarily detained for exercising their rights must be released immediately.
