Burkina Faso’s Strategic Pivot: Prime Minister Advocates for BRICS Membership

In an unexpected but strategically significant move, Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla, has publicly expressed the nation’s keen interest in joining BRICS. The alliance, which currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, stands as a formidable coalition representing some of the world’s most emerging economies.

Speaking at a recent event, PM Tambèla underscored the potential benefits of aligning with BRICS, citing economic diversification, increased foreign investment, and improved geopolitical standing as top motivations for such a membership. His remarks come at a time when Burkina Faso is seeking to broaden its economic partnerships and enhance its developmental prospects.

    Why BRICS?

Formed in 2009, BRICS was initially convened to create a counterbalance to the Western-centric economic systems. Over the years, the coalition has evolved into a powerful bloc that influences global economic policies. Collectively, BRICS economies account for over 23% of the world’s GDP and 16% of global trade. In recent years, the group has focused on fostering cooperation in various sectors including technology, finance, and sustainable development.

    Burkina Faso’s Strategic Interests

Located in West Africa, Burkina Faso has traditionally leaned on its agricultural sector, which employs about 80% of its population. The country is also rich in natural resources such as gold and cotton. However, recurring challenges including political instability, a growing humanitarian crisis driven by extremist activities, and a heavy reliance on foreign aid have impeded significant economic progress.

Joining BRICS could offer Burkina Faso several advantages. Economic relations with the BRICS nations would likely result in increased foreign investments, particularly in the agricultural, mining, and infrastructure sectors. Additionally, BRICS’ New Development Bank (NDB) could provide essential financial support for the nation’s development projects. Moreover, membership could position Burkina Faso more favorably in international trade negotiations and development agendas.

    A Broader Diplomatic Move

Burkina Faso’s interest in joining BRICS aligns with a broader diplomatic strategy. Over the past few years, the country has been diversifying its foreign policy, establishing stronger ties with Asian, Middle Eastern, and African nations, while gradually reducing its dependence on Western aid. This pivot is not unique to Burkina Faso; several African nations are exploring partnerships beyond traditional Western alliances.

    Next Steps

While Burkina Faso’s interest is clear, becoming a member of BRICS requires a formal application process and acceptance by the existing member countries. This includes meeting certain economic and political criteria that would justify its inclusion as a beneficial member of the coalition.

The coming months will likely see intensive diplomatic activity as Burkina Faso formalizes its application and seeks to gather support from current BRICS members. Amid a global shift toward multipolarity, Burkina Faso’s potential membership could symbolize a significant step in reshaping the global economic landscape.
