Ethiopia’s New Era of Multilateralism: BRICS Summit in Kazan
Ethiopia, a country with a rich history in international organizations, has recently made waves with its entry into the BRICS coalition in August 2023. This move represents a momentous shift in Ethiopia’s global positioning, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed participating in the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia on October 22, 2024.
Historically, Ethiopia has been a founding member of organizations such as the League of Nations, the United Nations, and the African Union, showcasing a commitment to multilateralism and peacekeeping efforts. However, despite its active participation, the country has struggled to fully benefit from these organizations due to unfair representation, limited financial access, and power struggles among dominant countries.
Joining BRICS presents new opportunities for Ethiopia on the international stage. Unlike other international organizations, BRICS operates as a multilateral platform that provides equal decision-making rights to all member states. With half of the world’s population and a collection of emerging economies, BRICS offers diverse economic and cultural cooperation opportunities for Ethiopia.
One of the key advantages of BRICS membership for Ethiopia lies in financial inclusion, trade, and investment opportunities. The New Development Bank (NDB), aligned with BRICS, offers member nations equitable and accessible economic opportunities, providing much-needed financial support for projects like the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Ethiopia, with its abundant natural resources, strong economic potential, and strategic geographic location, stands to benefit significantly from BRICS membership. The country’s relationships with key BRICS nations like China, Russia, and India, as well as growing trade ties with Egypt, South Africa, and the UAE, further enhance its position within the coalition.
In a world where global power dynamics are shifting, BRICS offers a unique opportunity for countries like Ethiopia to level the playing field and access resources for sustainable development. With its diverse economy, expanding tech sector, and strong diplomatic ties, Ethiopia is well-positioned to thrive within the BRICS bloc.
The rise of BRICS signifies a new chapter in international cooperation, with a focus on bridging the gap between the Global North and South. As Ethiopia embraces its role in this dynamic coalition, the country is poised to make significant strides in economic growth, technological advancement, and global security.
