Iran Condemns Dagestan Terror Attacks, Urges Global Response
Tehran, Iran – In a strong denouncement of the recent terror attacks in Dagestan, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, expressed profound condolences to the Russian government and its populace, emphasizing solidarity with the families affected and wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
On Sunday, the region of Dagestan, known for its diverse cultural and religious landscape, was shattered by a series of coordinated attacks. Terrorist factions targeted a police checkpoint in Makhachkala and launched assaults on two churches and a synagogue in Derbent, a city just 128 kilometers away. The synchrony and lethality of these attacks recall the grievous incidents in Russia’s turbulent past, such as the Moscow theater hostage crisis of 2002 and the Beslan school siege in 2004.
Kanaani asserted, “The Islamic Republic of Iran considers terrorism of any kind as a threat to human society and international security.” His statement underscores the significant peril posed by terrorism, echoing historical warnings about the spreading nature of extremist violence reminiscent of early 20th-century anarchist terrorism which once plagued Europe.
The spokesperson appealed to the international community, urging a unified and decisive effort to confront such common threats to humanity. This plea parallels historic calls for global solidarity seen during pivotal moments, such as the establishment of the United Nations in the aftermath of World War II, designed to foster international peace and cooperation.
The attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent, part of Russia’s predominantly Muslim North Caucasus region, represent the most severe episode of extremism in the area since March when armed militants wreaked havoc in a Moscow suburban concert hall, resulting in 145 fatalities. These tragic events demonstrate a persistent instability that has historically troubled the Caucasus, a region marked by its complex interplay of ethnic and religious identities.
